Wiretap of Decavalcante Mobster Aired on 'American Greed' Show

American Greed’s Mob Money, which is aired from time to time,  reveals the inner workings of the mob through the eyes of New Jersey’s DeCavalcante family. They were once seen as second-class mobsters living in the shadows of the bigger New York City families. But that changed in the late 1990’s when the feds busted all five New York families for racketeering. For the DeCavalcantes, the timing couldn’t have been better. Discover how the family matures, becomes success and eventually bows to its weakness and crumbles to its knees. A webpage dedicated to the show offers a written transcript between an informer and a mobster who didn't know he was being recorded. Joseph "Tin Ear" Sclafani is the Decavalcante mobster who was taped.

Sclafani and other members of his Borgata were also taped discussing The Sopranos, which they believed was about them (to an extent it was; David Chase likely based some characters and story lines on people and incidents that were reported to have really happened in the small New Jersey-homegrown family.)

Four members were secretly taped by the feds in the winter of 1999 as they were driving to a mob sit-down. As reported by Jerry Capeci in his online column ganglandnews.com, the men's conversation eventually turned to The Sopranos.

"Hey, what's this fucking thing, Sopranos?" soldier Sclafani asked. "What the fuck are they... Is this supposed to be us?"

"You are in there," capo Anthony Rotondo replied. "They mentioned your name in there." Apparently Rotondo was a big fan. [Not likely; it is highly doubtful the show was specifically referring to Tin Ear, though the name "Sclafani" may have been spoken.]

"Yeah? What did they say?" Sclafani asked.

A third wiseguy identified in the FBI transcripts only as "Billy" answered. "Watch out for that guy, they said. Watch that guy." Billy was apparently joking because the fourth man in the car started laughing. He was the one wearing the concealed wire.

"Every show you watch, more and more you pick up somebody. Every show," Rotondo said.

"Yeah, but it's not me," Sclafani said. "I'm not even existing over there."

  1. DAVID CHASE CREATED A DREAM WORLD WHEREIN NJ COULD HAVE A DISPUTE WITH NY AND PREVAIL. NEVER HAPPEN, IF NY WANTS IT NY GETS IT, ANYTHING ELSE IS FICTION.WHAT HE GOT RIGHT IS NJ IS A CESSPOOL OF CORRUPTION.PUBLIC OFFICIALS ON THE TAKE IS THE NORM. THIS WAS AUGMENTD BY POWER HUNGRY INCOMPETENT FEDS, SUCH AS FRED LACEY, HERB STERN, MICHAEL CHERTOFF AND MICHAEL FISHMAN, TAKING OFFICE AS REFORMERS WHILE SECRETLY KISSING THE RING. THE MOB USED THESE HYPOCRITS TO SETTLE PRIVATE SCORES HIDING BEHIND THE MANTRA OF HONEST LAW ENFORCEMENT INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS LIKE THE DECALVECANTE FAMILY COULD NEVER EXIST IF AN HONEST EFFORT TO ERADICATE THEM WAS MADE
