Billy Cutolo Whispered: 'Three for My Father...'

"Wild Bill" was feared and respected --
and he was considered the real deal.
The Discovery channel certainly did not go out of its way to promote “Mobster Confessions,” its new Mafia-related series, the first episode of which detailed the story of Bill Cutolo Jr.’s efforts to nail the Colombo family members who had whacked his father.

I have written repeatedly that I am not in any way connected, but if my father were killed and I happened to have access to a pistol, like Billy did, and if I actually knew who was behind my father’s murder, I’d say I would get in my car, find them and kill them all until they stopped me by putting one or two in my head.

But that’s easy for me to say, sitting here typing this, knowing full well my father would never be killed by mobsters because he is in no way connected, either.

Apparently Billy’s first sentiment upon learning his father had been “disappeared” mirrored my own.

“Three for my father,” he says he told Colombo mobster Jackie DeRoss after learning his father’s fate. DeRoss, in response, apparently dropped by after giving Billy some time to cool off to see how the Cutolos were holding up (and probably to try to steal Wild Bill’s book). According to Billy, DeRoss offered with his condolences a veiled threat to the family, which had been acting quite “emotionally” over the death of the family patriarch, reminding them there were “young kids” in the Cutolo mix.

For background on why “Wild Bill” Cutolo was killed, there is ample coverage online and on this site. Suffice it to say, he had chosen the wrong side in the Colombo civil war (of the early 1990s) and let’s just say the winning side had a long memory.

Looking fit, albeit a little too thin, with silvery gray hair and a deep brown tan, Billy Cutolo Jr. sat for Discovery and relayed how he was first bent on executing the men he fathomed were responsible for hitting his father. Only a small photo of his wife and young son hanging from his rear-view mirror stopped him dead in his tracks. That and a maxim that his father had told him years earlier: You kill two of them, four will come after you; you kill four, eight will come after you…

He chose the “legal” way, handing over Wild Bill’s book and wearing a wire. To get close to the Colombos, he pretended that he accepted his father’s death as natural causes for the line of work they were all in. He got close enough to be able to record them on the wire, saying bad things.

“Let them burn through all the money they stole paying for lawyers,” Cutolo said.

The rest is history: Alphonse “Allie Boy” Persico Jr. and Jackie DeRoss went away for life for Cutolo Sr.’s murder.

Billy and family went into WitPro, only the family wasn’t too thrilled about it. I even remember reading newspaper articles about it at the time, marveling that his own relatives were berating him in print for being a rat, saying stuff like “His father would roll over in his grave.”

From what I have heard about Wild Bill, he probably would.

  1. Wild Bill loved his son..And whatever decision Billy jr chose his father would stand behind him..When it comes to your family you do what you have to.. And without having a body and any closure Billy Jr did what needed to be done..All is fair in love and War...His love for his father meant more to him than what people's opinions did..In this case love won the WAR..

    1. Who the hell are you? Apparently you did not know my father pal...My father would never condone what that lieing thief did...NEVER!!!! My brother has been a liar since the day he came out of my mother's womb...Does anyone know how he robbed my father's money and gambled it away while my father was in jail. My father almost disowned my brother. This show was a joke and a huge lie. My brother had nothing to do with my father's life style. He never wanted that for his son and quite frankly knew he didn't have itin him. My father's words were "Cricky you should've been my son" and that right there is a true statement. Billy jr. has done nothing but get paid off of my father's death that's all. He didn't rat to avenge my father's death. He ratted to save his own ass because he was hated...He was scared to death and he had no balls, brains, or skills to do anything with his life. All that were close to my family and my father know the TRUTH!!! Shame on anyone who believes this lieing cowards words.....

  2. Ed, I completely agree with your statements in the article. If something would have happened to my father, like that, nothing would have stopped me. I´m speaking for myself of course. The previous poster has his (I assume it´s a he) opinion. I don´t know what went down with the Cutolos, father and son. But I know what´s going down with my father and me.

Apparently Cutolo Sr was murdered because of the Colombo intra struggle and the aftermath of it. Cutolo´s side (with Orena at the helm) lost the war. I know there are bad loosers in this world. But man...bad winners as well?

  3. HK! How goes it! The spark that ignited the Cutolo death plot was the ensuing imprisonment of high-level Colombos, who feared Wild Bill might take over the family. He very well might have, but we will never know. It was a calculated chess move -- but then they probably planned to kill him eventually anyway, so we can never really know for sure.

  10. Billy who? that's what everyone is saying... You are the most selfish, pathetic person who has ever walked this earth. Stop with the belittling comments its adolescent. It really doesn't matter what you put out there, whether it's television, radio, print or internet, it's all lies you know it and so does everyone else. You had your whole family sucked in to your rat filled world. The government didn't even use your testimony and they never called you to tell you they found your father, every agent hated you by then. (what a shocker) You need to move on and stop trying to profit off of a tragedy. Nothing you have done has been proactive, it's always been about the all mighty dollar. You never had your fathers respect, your delusional. I think you need to go back to that mental facility that the goverment paid for and have some more shock therapy....Maybe you will actually see yourself for who you are. PATHETIC!!!!

  14. Growing up on the streets of Bensonhurst it is funny to look back all these punks were tuff guys because their fathers were wiseguys.... So they would mess with everyone knowing they had their father and his crew behind them.
You take the father and his crew of killers out of the picture and you have a whinning crying rat like Jr. embarrising himself on national T.V. after the show his sister is ripping him to shreds...

I read Andrew DiDinatio's book and basically in an earlier chapter he rips jr.says he robbed Sr, like his sister is saying on here, so Jr gives DiDiniato some of Sr's money, they think Sr. is never coming home, Sr beats the case comes home, DiDianato gives Jr back the money (In the form of pounds of pot) because he knows they are now both in deep shit.

Jr. tells Sr. DiDiniato still owes the money and Sr. ends up hating DiDiniato wanting to whack and Jr. stands by and does nothing.

I have to say between the book and what the sister is saying here I have to believe their version of the story.

The best part about this story here is Jr. gets a chapter later in the book. I am saying to myself this guy just outed you as a deuche bag basically and you are writing a chapter in his book???

Strange you would think Didinatio would have dressed the story a little knowing you were in the book with him.

I would imagine Jr. is shopping a book deal and reality show at this point. There had to be a justifiable reason for him coming out and sobing like a little woman on national TV like he did.

LOL... Maybe he was showing off his acting skills...

    Bensonhurst....

  17. It's clear to me being with the NYPD and having worked some of these guys that the Colombo war of 1991-93 was not the impetus that lead to Cutolo's death. These guys are like politicians, they live in the minute, in the here and now. They didn't care about what happened 6 years prior. What they cared about was what was right in front of them: Wild Bill Cutolo was very, very well respected. He was incredibly smart, a huge earner, and liked by everyone. He had a huge crew fiercely loyal to him. The Persicos weren't stupid. They saw what was coming. Wild Bill was a freight train, and the Persicos feared that everyone in the crews would fall in behind Cutolo. So they had him killed for that and for no other reason. Cutolo was nothing but loyal to these guys, and he paid for it with his life.
As far as his son, he makes several contradictory statements in his interview and in writing. On TV, he said he received a phone call from an agent, saying, "Billy, it's all over. They found your father". Then Billy starts crying. However, in DiDonato's book, he himself writes that he was at some chain restaurant, Outback or something, when he saw it come over the TV. From there he writes that he tried to get to a computer with internet access so he could verify the story. That is a HUGE discrepancy in story, one that cannot be overlooked. Plus the son's testimony was so found to have so many holes in it that he didn't even testify. So why a judge would thank him, as he claims, is anyone's guess. Plus DiDonato's allegations that Billy stole money from his father and tried to pin it on DiDonato is verified through more than one source.

It definitely is a sensational story, one that needs to be told, and I'm sure a book is in the works somewhere. I just hope it's a work of true crime and not fantasy.

    Retired NYPD
May Mr. Cutolo's soul rest in peace eternally

  18. Wow! Can't believe the Cutolo chick. This has been pretty entertaining. I watched a thing on cable about the mob and decided to Google Bill Jr. Have lived in Oregon most of my life so...really enjoy his accent. Gawd!!! Feel like I was dropped into feeding time at the Zoo. I don't care if he's lying or not--we're talkin' about the Mob for God Sake! My dad was a State Cop and I'm glad I didn't grow up around the mob!
