Did NYPD Know They Nailed a Colombo Wiseguy? Tweet Says, No

Image
A 47-year-old man was caught with a gun at his Staten Island Kemball Avenue home and arrested last Saturday at 8:13 p.m. Colombo guys went at a newspaper union to help an underboss's son. Police arrived at the location, having been summoned by a 911 call about a violent domestic dispute, an NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information source told a reporter. Rocco Miraglia Junior's verbal dispute with his 49-year-old wife had escalated into a physical confrontation during which he allegedly punched her. Then, in a preemptive move, he broke a landline telephone to prevent her from calling the police. It didn't work. Enter the cops, who put the cuffs on Miraglia and brought him in, where he was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon and various misdemeanors, including assault, criminal mischief, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and acting in a manner injurious to a child. The NYPD touted the incident on social media as a "great...

Who Killed Joe Colombo? We Asked His Son

Image
Anthony Colombo died on January 6 in San Diego of complications from diabetes. Anthony was Joseph Colombo's son. Joseph Colombo, ready to take on all comers. Joseph Bonanno ordered his top gun, Joseph Colombo, to kill two bosses. Colombo, seemingly appalled at the move,  showed fealty to the two bosses, Carlo Gambino and Tommy Lucchese. The Commission took care of Bonanno (though he certainly retaliated decades later, perhaps unintentionally) and as a reward for Colombo's loyalty, they named him, only 41 years old at the time, boss of one of New York's Five Families -- the Profaci family, which was re-christened t he Colombo crime family . It still carries his name to this day. Anthony Colombo recently took the time to answer some questions for the following Q&A. We connected via a mutual friend. Colombo: The Unsolved Murder  by Don Capria and Anthony Colombo is available now, priced at $4.99 for the Kindle version and $16.95 for the paperback. ...

Unsolved 1970 Hit Heralded Years of Murders in New York Mafia

Image
The dead man lay on his back, his arms frozen in an odd, upward position, away from the body "as if he were reading a newspaper." He wore an overcoat over a green suit replete with white dress shirt and dark necktie. He was dressed in layers of clothes, with pale-blue-colored pajamas underneath. The corpse's clean-shaven face looked like it had recently entered middle age. Rubber galoshes were stretched over his shoes. The sum of $156 in cash was found in his pocket. But the body held not a single piece of paper that identified who it was. The victim seemingly had done something decidedly impractical. Though his face was intact, it was discovered that he'd been shot in the back of the head four times with a .25 caliber pistol. Someone had pulled an old Saturday Night Special on him and finished him off. Those once-ubiquitous cheap portable guns packed little stopping power, which didn't matter if the weapon was used properly, meaning up close and personal, maybe i...

The Mobster Who Convicted Half the Mafia

Image
It is well known that Greg Scarpa Senior had been a turncoat since 1960 and that he provided law enforcement with all the dope he could muster on his enemies, rivals and even friends -- basically anyone but himself. Greg Scarpa did deep and lasting damage to most of the Five Families, as well as other crime families. We've written here, more than once, about his missions for the FBI, one of which involved him sallying south to help extinguish the Mississippi Burning problem . He went on other missions, too. Such complex duplicity requires a sharp mind and probably an intelligence level well above average.
