Gotti Biopic Widely Panned by Critics

Image
"John (Travolta) was great, but it wasn’t perfect because nobody could have gotten it perfect. John did a better job than Armand Assante [in the 1996 film “Gotti”], and Armand did a good job." ---John Junior Gotti, who is not one to mince words...nor hedge bets... John Travolta dons the white suit and does the Saturday Night Fever thing..... "I’d rather wake up next to a severed horse head than ever watch “Gotti” again," began a recent memorable  New York Post review of the long-gestating gangster revisionist biopic, Gotti. The reviewer added: "The finished product belongs in a cement bucket at the bottom of the river." And he called it the "worst movie of the year so far." In the years -- eight, in total -- it took to make this film, four directors passed on the project, which had a grand total of 44 producers. Kevin Connolly, the fifth and final, helmed the film, which premiered Friday night. So we can blame him. Co...

What the National Enquirer Wrote About Gotti Biopic's Delay Is Flashy B.S.

Image
John Travolta Has ‘Gotti’ Movie Rubbed Out By The Mob. Film suspiciously shelved just 10 days ahead of premiere ! That's the headline and blurb on a National Enquirer story that was so unintentionally hilarious, your loyal correspondent nearly tumbled out of his seat and spilled hot coffee all over himself. Here's a JPG of the actual first page of the story -- which isn't really a story.  It's a sort of "interactive experience." You can see the outline of a kind of story . It says, between the lines, that there are some really bad (wise)guys out there who don't want you to watch this film (because it gives away sacred Mafia secrets).  It's a slideshow, with each slide including a single paragraph. The story is relayed to us from paragraph to paragraph....  Let's get through this as quickly and painlessly as possible. The story posits that the New York Mafia -- the entire New York Mafia " whacked" the Gotti...

Why Earlier Versions of Gotti Biopic Failed

Image
From New York magazine's We’re Going to Take Over F---ing Hollywood                Illustration by Ward Sutton It was announced last September that the John Travolta Gotti biopic , which twice previously had collapsed, was back in production. Gangsters Inc. ran a story on December 3 of last year: Gotti movie starring John Travolta begins shooting in March . The lede reads:  It’s official: The new Gotti movie Shadow of My Father will begin filming in March of 2016. Director Kevin Connolly shared a photo of the script on social media and the official Twitter page of the film posted the release date along with it. But that was then. As has happened, now three times, the picture appears to be on hold. It hasn't begun filming. And the New York Post's Page Six reported that John Travolta’s publicist said that Travolta was still in negotiations for the role.... "Once negotiations are finalized, we will have a start date fo...

Junior Lends Film His Father's Jewelry, Car

Image
John A. Gotti aka Junior is lending Travolta his father's personal items for a film about John Gotti Senior. John Gotti, former Gambino crime family boss, died in prison of cancer in 2002 at the age of 61. His son, former Gambino crime family boss John A. Gotti (aka "Junior"), says he left Cosa Nostra life in the dust many years ago. If John Junior is eyeing any kind of mob these days, it's the one based on the West Coast, aka Hollywood. High-caliber star John Travolta will play the Dapper Don in the upcoming production based on Junior's self-published book  Shadow of My Father . Junior claims he wrote the manuscript in response to the release of another book, George Anastasia's Gotti's Rules , based on the life and prodigious crimes of former Gambino enforcer John Alite .

Gotti Biopic Returns with John Travolta

Image
The John Gotti biopic is on again, with a new set of Hollywood backers joining the original producer. John Travolta remains tied to the project and is ready, once again, to step into the shoes of mob boss John Gotti in the long-gestating film, which Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films, Fiore Films and Herrick Entertainment are together producing. The two Johns:  Gotti and Travolta Travolta met with buyers and glad-handed the press at a Toronto event Sept. 11 where he discussed how the Gotti project had become a family project. His wife, Kelly Preston, and daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, have signed on to play Gotti’s real-life wife and daughter in the Lionsgate project.

Dept. of 'You've Got to be Kidding': Kasman Critiques Travolta as Not 'Tough Enough' to Play Gotti

Image
Kasman: Travolta not tough enough to play John Gotti Sr. He should know! Of all people, Lewis Kasman -- who is not a former mobster, as the Mail Online erroneously reports -- claims John Travolta is not tough enough to play notorious Mafia boss John Gotti in the upcoming biopic produced by Fiore Films, reports the U.K. newspaper's website. "For John Gotti Sr., you need a man's man to play that role," said Kasman, who is in the FBI's witnesses protection program -- not where you'd expect to find a real "man's man." Let's break this down a little and put the inmates back in the straight jackets to keep them from trying to run the asylum: Kasman was a two-bit phony who pretended to be a friend of the Gotti family, going so far as to call himself "John Gotti's adopted son," when for years he was tape-recording and handing over information to the Feds behind the Gotti's collective backs. He even wiretapped Gotti Senior...

Travolta Meets Gotti Matriarch for Sit Down

Image
From left to right: Victoria Gotti (daughter), John Travolta, John "Junior" Gotti and Lindsay Lohan, who may or may not appear in the Fiore Films production. John Travolta visited New York this past week to speak with the widow of the gangster John Gotti, whom he is portraying in the upcoming biopic produced by Fiore Films. Late Mafia boss John Gotti died in 2002 while serving a life sentence. In the upcoming film, titled Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father, will explore the relationship between the notorious crime boss and his son John "Junior" Gotti (who has a "story by" credit, although he didn't pen the screenplay and reportedly sold the story rights for half a million dollars). Travolta has been thoroughly researching the role, according to several published reports, and on Thursday even landed on the doorstep of  Gotti's widow, Victoria. He was photographed arriving at the family home in Queens, New York, and after spending two hours i...

Pacino To Play "Neil" Dellacroce in Gotti Film

Image
Pacino to play Neil Dellacroce. "Gotti: Three Generations" will reunite director Barry Levinson with his " Bugsy " screenwriter, James Toback, and is set to feature such big-screen luminaries as John Travolta, Joe Pesci, and (ok, we'll include her in the list) Lindsay Lohan. Now we learned we can add to that lineup the one and only Al Pacino, who has signed to play an important role in the mobster biopic, according to ScreenRant and other published sources. "That’s all the more fitting, seeing how producer Marc Flore has boasted before about the Gotti flick being 'the new ‘Godfather’,” the article noted. Pacino will play Aniello “Neil” Dellacroce, the legendary mentor of Gotti Sr., as well as Gambino family underboss and head of what pundits called "the blue-collar wing" of the Gambino family, compared with Boss Paul's white-collar wing. "Toback is currently reworking actor Leo Rossi’s "Gotti: Three Generat...

Travolta Has 'Sit Down' With Junior & Co. About Gotti Biopic

Image
From the U.K.'s Daily Mail website  (photos courtesy of Splash News  unless otherwise noted) [Editor's notes inserted where I believe necessary, usually to correct, clarify and question. The writer claims Travolta "signed on" to play the role of John Gotti at this dinner -- but that is not so. From an article on Entertainment Weekly's website : "According to Marc Fiore — the CEO of Fiore Films, LLC — the Pulp Fiction star is in serious talks to play New York City mob boss John Gotti in Gotti, an upcoming film executive produced by Fiore about three generations of the crime family." But, in a parenthetical, the article adds: "(A source in Travolta’s camp says it’s one of four projects he’s considering at this time)." Overall, I don't think the Brits understand the American mob or the film industry -- or maybe it's some of their journalists that don't; they already think the big bust -- one of the largest in history  -- is going t...
