Lichtman Show Casts Retired FBI Agent DeVecchio in a Dark Light

Jeffrey Lichtman, on his May 13 radio show on AM 970 The Apple, interviewed writer Frederic Dannen about former FBI agent Lin DeVecchio, who for years was under fire -- but in the end, formally exonerated -- for providing former Colombo mobster Greg Scarpa, now years-deceased, with "inside information" to help Scarpa find enemies and earn.

This interview takes the view that DeVecchio was guilty, though it in and of itself provides little substance to back its assertions. And though we do indeed believe DeVecchio is innocent of these alleged crimes, in the interest of fairness (and the fact the producer hooked us up), we'd like to provide the Lichtman-Dannen interview here. Note -- they switch gears from DeVecchio-Scarpa to discuss Demjanjuk, the accused Nazi guard.

Lichtman provided this biased Facebook blurb for the show:... We'll have on writer Fredric Dannen to discuss FBI agent Lin DeVecchio's crooked relationship with mafia killer Greg Scarpa, as well as the conviction of Nazi guard John Demjanjuk.

Lichtman is a prominent defense attorney in New York City who represented John Gotti Jr. before "Junior" fired him. But according to Wikipedia, before getting the ax (not literally in this case) Lichtman "managed to secure a dismissal of three charges of murder conspiracy, an acquittal of a $25 million securities fraud charge, and a hung jury on every remaining count brought against him." Makes you wonder what Carnesi did.

Fredric Dannen is an American journalist and author. He is best known for his landmark book Hit Men: Powerbrokers and Fast Money Inside the Music Business (1990), which investigated the behind-the-scenes dealings of the major American record labels in the 1970s and 1980s. Dannen also wrote a piece for the New Yorker back in 1996 about DeVecchio.

  1. Lichtman is a wannabee, he wants to be a player in the know. Instead he is a peripheral player picking up others scraps left on the table. Dannen did some good research, but wet wet his pants when face to face with Moishe Levy.Devecchio was a guy in over his head. He did not have the street smarts to handle Scarpa. Rather Greg manipulated Lin in ways that made him a fool and look corrupt. Greg wned the Bureau after Miss. and never let Hoover's boys forget it. Fear of public disclosure on Scarpa's reprehensble conduct colored the entire relationship. This was not the only time the Bureau used Scarpa to do their dirty work.

  2. greg was like a fox in the chicken coop. He used and abused the trust of devecchio, the fbi and the colombo family. junior's continued jail stints coupled with an uncertainty surrounding greg's loylties by junior and his underlings kept greg safe. the one wiseguy greg feared was sonny franzese. he believed greg a rat and would not have hesitated to eliminate him if sound proof could be secured.. that is why he lived in a revolving door in and out of prison greg was living proof of a government entering the twilight zone of legal action. greg was a stone cold killer. partnering with him made federal agents accessories to his mass murer
