'Ndrangheta Clash in Toronto: When The Wolfpack Stood Up To Siderno

Image
By Andrew Machin “ The criminal life of (members of the) ‘Ndrangheta is born and develops in the Locale. It’s for the economic interests and for the prestige of (their) own Locale that every single affiliate commits crimes. "-- Direzione Nazionale Antimafia, Yearly Report, December 2012 Michael (Big Mike) Leventis It is helpful to view the ‘Ndrangheta—the Italy-based organized crime organization with global reach—as an octopus, to borrow the metaphor used by turncoat Rocco Varacalli (see  ‘ Ndrangheta Governing Body in Greater Toronto Area: Latest Developments ), with its head located in Calabria, Italy, and its tentacles inhabiting various countries across the globe, including Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, and Canada. In some regions, it has more than one tentacle. The ‘Ndrangheta competes with rival criminal organizations wherever it has sought to plant a flag. Only in its home base, the southern Italy region of Calabria, does the group enjoy supremacy, with ...

Maurice “Mom” Boucher. For the nonce, we can only speculate about the “why” of it, as Boucher’s motives were not included in the RCMP’s summary of facts presented during last month’s proceeding. Do Acquittals of Montreal Mob Leaders Mark End of Rizzuto Regime?

Image
One of the two alleged leaders of the Montreal Cosa Nostra entity was released from jail on Monday, February 19, after charges against them were dropped. Vito Rizzuto's son, Leonardo Leonardo Rizzuto, 48, and Stefano Sollecito were acquitted of gangsterism and conspiracy to traffic cocaine when Quebec Superior Court Justice Eric Downs ruled that they'd been illegally wiretapped in a conference room at their lawyer’s office. So basically, the main evidence against the pair, a single conversation recorded in that conference room, was tossed, and prosecutors said they had no other evidence to prove the charges of gangsterism and conspiracy to traffic cocaine. Leonardo, son of Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto (who died in 2013), had been detained since the arrests, while Sollecito--whose father, Rizzuto-loyalist Rocco Sollecito, was murdered in 2016--was granted bail in 2016 to undergo cancer treatment. Leonardo still faces charges of possession of a firearm and drugs, a...
