Ex-Acting Genovese Boss Sentenced to Life

In Manhattan federal court, former Genovese crime family acting boss Arthur Nigro and two associates were sentenced to life in prison.

They were found guilty of a range of crimes, including two murders, back in April.

Nigro and Fotios and Ty Geas, brothers, were found guilty of the 2003 murder of former Genovese boss Adolfo "Big Al" Bruno, who ran the family's Springfield crew.

Nigro ordered the hit to increase his power in the Genovese crime family, and to punish Bruno for allegedly speaking to the FBI, according to federal prosecutors.

Fotios and Ty Geas also were convicted of the Nov. 4, 2003, murder of Gary Westerman in Agawam, Mass. The defendants shot and killed Westerman after they suspected him of cooperating with the Massachusetts State Police.

The three men were also convicted of the attempted murder of Frank Dadabo.

Nigro was a known Genovese street boss for years. The Geas brothers are Greek, which meant they'd never be inducted into the Mafia.

On May 19, 2003, Ty Geas shot shot Dadabo nine times on a Bronx street. Fotios helped plan the hit and drove the getaway car, authorities said.

All three defendants were also convicted of conspiring to murder Louis Santos, who they suspected was cooperating with authorities.

The trio also was convicted and sentenced for the attempted murder of a union boss that same year, and a series of extortion attempts that occurring in Springfield, Hartford, Conn., and Manhattan.

"The jury's swift verdict in this case takes some very dangerous men off the streets -- men who clearly did not think twice about killing anyone who got in their way," said Preet Bharara, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, in a statement at the conviction.
