Phil 'Lucky' Giaccone Was the Power Behind the Throne

Phil Giaccone
Phil Lucky Giaccone is an interesting figure in Mafia history, primarily known as one of the three capos blown apart by Joe Massino and a crew he put together to do the work; the team included Vito Rizzuto, current boss of Montreal.

Many major powers in the Bonanno family started out in his crew. That would include Tommy DiFiore, the current (or acting) boss of the under-siege Bonannos.

It has been written that Phil Lucky was the one his faction of the family was touting to be boss; he was actually the key target of that three-capo takedown.

Giaccone, back in the 1970s, actually threw boss Tommy DiFiore out of his crew -- putting the destined for success gangster on the shelf.

"Reading Around" is a new regular feature I am launching with this story, which is coming soon. Its purpose is to put forward interesting stories from the mob's past taken from the many mob books I have accumulated. Since the author usually is someone with an ax to grind, veracity is difficult to judge. But I do make sure each story passes the "smell" test -- in other words, that what is postulated is likely -- or at least possible -- to have happened.

Stay tuned for the story of Phil Lucky's rise and fall, according to his nephew.

  1. I'm looking forward to this feature. There isn't a lot of info on Phil Giaccone. Other than the famous "3 capos" murder. Keep up the good work!

    1. I'll put out an "open message" to Joe Massino at the top of the story -- which will be published VERY SOON... You'd be surprised: I actually have gotten good, valuable reception from public attempts to contact people.

  5. I totally agree with the poster above. It would be awesome with a book on Massino, told by his own words. I know there are books on him by DeStefano etc, but it´s not the same thing if it´s not coming straight from the horse´s mouth.
Names, dates and full description on guys like Rastelli, Giaccone, Sonny Red, Sonny Black and other main players around that time would be great. His encounter with agent Pistone posing as Donnie Brasco would be interesting to read about.

  6. Pistone met Giaccone? I cant recall if he did... I have some "inside stuff" on Philly -- especially; he and my grandfather were friends. My grandfather was one of the first "citizens" who knew something was wrong. Phil's wife had called my grandmother/grandfather asap.... for years my grandfather would be daydreaming and suddenly just say: "Philly is gone..." he knew who Phil was - they'd grown up together. I have written about a dinner my grandparents gave for Phil, Dom and Sonny Red and their wives. I was you but have some memories -- mainly of how nice they were, respectful to my family....
