Renee's Mob Candy Line: 'Everything a Mob Princess Would Wear'

We were shocked how many views this story racked up since we first ran it a year ago. Considering the more recent news about the cease-and-desist letters, we thought we'd post this again....

Episode one of season four of “Mob Wives” began with a party in Philadelphia.

Renee hired a new model to work with her new clothing line.

What line is that, some of you may ask. Well, Mob Candy (by Renee Graziano) is the name of the brand she has been talking up and promoting on the Internet for the past year or so. It includes a a lot of products: Mob Candy Jewelry, Mob Candy Apparel , Mob Candy Shoes, and accessories and t-shirts.

Frank DiMatteo, owner, Mob Candy.
Folks who look leftward on this very web page will see Renee posing for the cover of Mob Candy magazine; no, it is not part of her line.

Mob Candy magazine was in fact launched in 2007 by others with no ties to her then or now. Prior to the publication, the brand had originally been used for a line of Mafia-inspired clothing. But even before that, there was a company called Mob Candy that sold, well, candy...

Regular readers of this blog will remember when this issue first broke; Renee's fantasy about inventing the name and then launching a whole bunch of products as part of it was raised on the official blog of Mob Candy. [Disclosure: I write articles for Mob Candy magazine.].

Her supporters were quick to chirp: she copyrighted, she copyrighted, she copyrighted. As I said, that was never the point of the issue.

I would assume that Renee obviously managed to copyright the Mob Candy name on the products in her line, though I may be wrong about that. And the founder/owner/editor/publisher of Mob Candy, Frank DiMatteo, failed to do anything to interfere, as far as I know. But many people know about the move Renee pulled on Frank, and I'd go so far as to wager that many people--who keep a level head and apply common sense--can't help but come down on DiMatteo's side. I do, and not because I write for the guy--or that I hang out with him a lot and talk to him a lot, as well as the editor Nick Christophers. I, in fact, affectionately refer to him as "Uncle Frank."

I spoke with Frank today. I asked him--what's up with Renee and Mob Candy? He laughed and said, "I hope she advertises the hell out of it; she'll be helping to build even more brand equity for the name of my magazine." Frank indicated that he has plans of his own for the brand and that he has a partner in place. (More news on that coming soon.)

As we continued chatting, DiMatteo related that he once got a phone call from a guy calling for another guy calling for someone else ... light-hearted words were spoken -- but Frank got the message.

Frank knows something about the life--his father was a heavy hitter in the Colombo family back in the day, and Frank himself was a street guy for a while, thieving and partying with the legendary upstart Mafioso Joe Gallo, who was famously whacked inside a Little Italy eatery then owned by Matty the Horse Ianiello that still stands today: Umberto's Clam House.

So Frank knows how to deal with mobsters. Precisely what the call said to Frank or requested of Frank, the man won't say. But Frank still smiles often, says whatever is in his heart, and sleeps like a baby at night.

As noted, aside from originating as an actual candy company, Mob Candy, interestingly, was first launched as the name for a line of Mafia-inspired clothing owned by Tyrone Christopher. A chance encounter between Tyrone and magazine publisher DiMatteo (who published Screw many years back) led to the idea to create Mob Candy magazine, a glossy color magazine devoted to the gangster lifestyle with historical profiles about famous gangsters. (Which reminds me that I still have to finish my story on Giancana for Frank.)

Renee, in an interview in which she announced the new endeavor, said she was launching Mob Candy-branded jewelry, shoes and makeup. In addition to that, Renee claimed she created the brand, when it was only in 2011 that she had appeared on the very cover of Mob Candy Magazine. Renee actually included photos from the magazine shoot on her very own website.(The link is gone now, replaced with her Mob Candy online store, as you can see.)

"I love my Mob Candy," Renee said in another interview, the one which really drew the ire of some folk. "I love the name of it. It came about because I love color. Color changes your mood. And candy makes you feel better. And we can’t forget the mob part. So I put it all together. One day, I was sitting on the couch pigging out, eating M&M’s. I was thinking, “I’m fuckin’ getting fat,” and then I put the two words together. Mob Candy is a fun line; it’s shoes and jewelry and body lotions. It’s everything a mob princess would wear, without the cost."

Why would she claim credit for creating the brand, when logic dictates she had to have heard about it since she posed for the cover and even includes images of the Mob Candy photo shoot on her website? Alls I can say is, we do know she had a problem with Percs and Xanny the Nanny. I'd chalk it up to that but as far as I know, she never retracted.

One solution for all that is going on--which Frank wouldn't really comment on specifically--would be that there are some problems between the parties. If I were to speculate, I'd say Renee got pissed off and decided to later make her move because Mob Candy issued no less than four covers during the month in which Renee appeared, an unorthodox move by the magazine that could have diluted the impact Renee was probably hoping to create by being on the cover in the first place.

MafiaLife Chris noted on the Mob Candy blog, "... We wanted Karen Gravano on the cover, if anything... " And so did the network VHI, he added. "[VH1 was] contacting us pushing the desire to film us doing a photoshoot with Karen Gravano, and interviews where I was given the ok to ask any tough questions to Karen."

So the magazine supposedly wanted Karen Gravano because they believed her name recognition was stronger than Graziano's, and VH1 made the proposition more attractive by saying they would film a Karen photo shoot. [Interesting in light of the recent departures of three of the show's cast members...]

So a likely scenario is: after thinking she was the cover model for the special "Mob Wives" issue of Mob Candy, Renee suddenly learned that the publication had produced  four covers of the same exact issue -- same release date, same contents. (The other two cover photos were Love Majewski and Tony "Nap" Napoli.)

This could be the reason that Renee decided she would use the Mob Candy name on certain products that were available.

But I think she took this strategy too far when she started with the claims that she had created the brand itself.

As Chris wrote: "Now, she goes on TV, and is promoting all over the Internet -- on blogs, and on her website about a Mob Candy shoe line? And Mob Candy Jewelry? That’s not even the half. Not only is she just using the brand name pretending she never heard of it before, she has also done interviews claiming the root of her Mob Candy name idea came into her head randomly after thinking about how she loves colors, and candy has different colors. And of course, she couldn’t forget to add the mob to it, right? That’s how she got the idea!

"Did she forget she was on the cover of a magazine titled Mob Candy way before she told her story about how she had some colorful idea for a new brand? Did she forget the ideas that we discussed with her production company in that business meeting? You tell me, are we crazy to be pissed? And, I am not talking about legalities here. I am not asking if what she did was legal or not. I am simply talking 100 percent on cold hard morality principle. What she did was wrong!"

I believe she is wrong for claiming credit for creating the brand; Renee makes herself look foolish by seeming to ignore reality.

And even if she copyrighted everything under the sun, it doesn't make what she did anything more than a shitty thing to do.

    1. My above comment refers to a multiple-part comment I deleted because it had some patent untruths in it -- such as the idea that Gotti and Gravano made a deal before Gravano turned. Gravano would've been whacked before such a deal could take place, first off, and secondly, the only deal they made is Gravano would lay off Junior if Gotti didn't kill his son. And I am sure it wasn't a face to face deal... That tipped me right off about the commenter...

  6. MIKE i am not BIG ANG nor am i an associate of her. She is another one who full of shit she spills. Her and family for the exception of her brothers are DRAMA QUEENS. She says she loves the life and wise guys ya well all she ever was was a side chick she was never a girlfriend to anyone! She was and still is bad on drugs and a heavy alcoholic. Apple dont fall far from the tree either with that kid of hers. U ever wonder why her daughter is no where in any of this fame? Well it because she has nothing to do with her mother or friends and family. Ang was never a good mother she was a BREEDER. I know alot of these girls fathers, uncles, mothers, and boyfriends whatever u wanna call it. I been around for a long time and hate how these women carry themselves and draw attention to a way of living as WE CALL IT that wants NO ATTENTION. They are bitter or broken or being very spiteful because they got left in the cold. THEY KNEW WHO THEY WERE WITH. THEY NO WHO THERE FAMILY IS OR WAS. they didnt wake up on day and boom this all happened. they new damn well what they signed up for. they are no good trash and that is what they were left 2 be and this is what they are doing now to say FUCK U. OH N YES all of what I SAID IS TRUE. I been in Howard Beach for over 30 years and no alot more that ya think. This is not me just blowing smoke up peoples asses this is FACT. this is shit u cant buy or find out unless your in the circle. u all have a nice nite and hope ya all safe with what sandy left here for us to clean up. 7. Apparently you don't know as much as u say because Big Ang aka Herman Muenster's daughter Raquel has appeared on Angs show & she auditioned for mobwives season 3 but didn't get the part.Raquel and her child live right in Angs new (rented by VH1)house.Angs sister Jeanine aka troll doll is in a heated rivalry with Jennifer Grazano and Renne she has declaredherself ang's manager and has proceeded to book Ang and the other wives appearances.Jeanine also auditioned fór the part of the newest mob mistress err wife. as far as I can see disloyalty and backstabbing runs even deeper with the muensters than it does with Renne. after reading this article I did some research (something I wish all these blogs would do) and according to the public records at the USTPO. Mob can't mag never trademarked the name now don't mistake this as support for renne (what she did is shitty)but it states well over a year ago Mr.Frank DiMatteo (the actual owner of mobcandy magazine was notified and given 30days to rebuttal rennes application. So why is mr.mafialife complaining now? I think all the commentors here agree that Renne did a disgraceful thing but is it any better for Chris to wait until she's in rehab to attack her? I was well informed that the only cover Mr.Dimatteo wanted to publish was Love Majewski and her comment which is now missing kind of hinted at that. Her cover wasn't even mentioned here,I understand that Ed isn't fond of her but you have to admit of the 4 covers she's by far the hottest. Then again aren't the craziest women always the hottest?

  9. Chris hasn't been on the up and up either. Sorry this has happened to his father-in-law Frank. However, when people get caught up in the drama it can come back to bite them. The moral high ground isn't to be taken only when it is to benefit you. It doesn't take a genius to know who leaked the pictures of Renee's vagina to TMZ at the Mob Candy photo shoot. I think Renee Graziano owed them nothing if not written in ink on paper. Frank should've looked into trademarking the name long ago. I am all for op-ed pieces. I would enjoy your site more if you stopped getting caught up into the drama and falling for frauds. It lessens the quality of your site and credibility. By the way, there was money borrowed to print those magazines. It has not been paid back. I am curious to see if this comment will see the light of day.

    1. I never mentioned trademark or lawsuits you will notice -- and for a reason. Franks values are old school...he doesn't strike me as the type to run to a lawyer. And she actually claims credit for creating the name -- and runs photos from the "MOB CANDY" shoot on her own website! I don't like wasting space on this crap but let's call a spade a spade. She is insulting her audience and doesn't even realize it... and neither does her audience apparently...

    2. And yes your comment so the light of day -- your anonymous comment in which you say "there was money borrowed to print those magazines. It has not been paid back." How about telling us how you know this? Who are you - what is your source? Why should I run an anonymous comment with a highly inflammatory piece of info like that when I have no idea if it is true or not? I'll give you a day to source that detail, then your comment is gone....

    3. People have the privilege to be anonymous if they choose to online. It's a choice I have made. My source is the person who loaned Frank the money. Many viewers and those who actually know Renee, Drita, Ang, Ramona, and Carla grasp they're not on the up & up. If you dig deep you may even find paper work on one of them being a snitch. You take my comment down as you please. It is your site. I shared a bit a truth. You believe it or you don't. It doesn't change the facts. It doesn't ruined my day. I find Renee wrong on one account only which is lying about how she came up with the name.

I will indulge you with a proviso - email me so we can talk. If you have info I deem credible I will put it in the story, not leave it in the comments section.... email me at eddie2843@gmail.com. 11. Who is giving Ed Scarpo shit? He can write what he wishes. I certainly did not write he could not. I read his site on occasion. I decided to share my opinion. I am not Protestant. Ed has a decent site. Though is he not always accurate, neither am I. Renee was shooting a cover for Mob Candy magazine. During some of the shots her vagina was exposed. It was not Renee's intent for her vagina to be photographed. It just happened as it does during photo shoots often. Of course Mob Candy owner Frank weren't going to put those in his magazine. They were bad shots. However, the photos were given to TMZ.

Not to long ago, Ed Scarpo got mixed up with an individual who was clearly a fraud. I chose to share with Mr. Scarpo my opinion. It was not an attack nor was I trying to disrespect him in anyway. He has a comment box. I decided to comment. Who am I? I am American too. A person who read Mr. Scarpo defending the fraud claiming another person was obviously jealous of her.

  13. My blog clearly stated that it was a scumbag move to claim the brand idea was hers. I don't know why my father in law didn't trademark, and I don't know why he hasn't done anything legal yet. That's his business.

Renee was real cool with me, and I promoted the shit out of her cover and even burned a few bridges over choosing her cover over some others. I spent my own money to send fans free mags that she autographed, and I was a huge part in pushing us on the mob wives show episodes.

My dad does hard work to publish the magazine, and I honestly feel her dramatic antics could have drew lots of traffic to the magazine if she really wanted it to. She obviously didnt. She wanted to pretend like it was her own idea, and move forward with mob candy branded products. We were discussing lots of moves and proposing tons of ideas to work together with her sister Jenn. She was shooting them down and returning emails requesting ownership of the projects that were unrealistic. At no point did they mention that Renee would be doing her own line of mob candy stuff. Again, not that they were obligated, just that it was a huge slap in the face from someone who was supposedly so appreciative of finally getting on the cover of the magazine she told me she saw such a long time ago. I made that happen. Not my father. I did. Because my dad was telling me I was an asshole the entire time.

With all that TV coverage, and mob wives exposure on Renee, they sold nowhere near the sopranos star frank Vincent did. The cover with Tony Napoli sold almost 4 times the amount. Why is that? My father was right. I was the asshole for giving her that cover. Love deserved it 10 times over with her looks, but I was too busy promoting the mob wives and had little time to schedule book signings and anything more then what I had on my plate with mob wives. It was a lot of work, too much for me to handle alone. And I will make it up for her this season of mob wives. I'll be promoting the shit out of Love Majewski. She's gonna be great on that show because she has a fun personality.

Renee's friend took pics that day of the photoshoot. Maybe he sent them to TMZ. We had to ask him to stop flashing. If I wanted a story for tmz, trust me that day we had one. I'm just not a dirtbag like that. I considered Renee a friend/pal. I never sent images to tmz. As for my dads debts, they are none of my business. I don't know any details on that stuff. I know I saw him pay many contractors and artists and printers and Distributers with my own eyes. I know he was a hard worker, keep a business afloat when it prolly could have went under if he didnt love it so much.

Don't be surprised if you see a mob candy reality show someday soon. You can't imagine the craziness it takes to build the magazine, and publish it step by step, have the meetings, parties, and encounters. All within a family tree of nana, mom, dad, brothers, wife, and grand kids of a Brooklyn knock around family of tough guys ( not wise guys. Only frank was a wise guy and his mom and dad). Me, I'm just a basic tough broooklynite who can't stand the mob lifestyle, and I talk about that in my blogs. I'm no wanna be.

We didnt deserve to be fucked like that. Renee should reach out, apologize, and start cross promoting our projects, and giving us due for what is ours and sharing the wealth. We shouldn't have to sue her. Just do the fucking right thing. happy new year everyone. Check out my blog. Http://www.mafialifeblog.com

  16. Renee will have to pay back any $$ she made using the pseudonym MobCandy. Once it's published in the The Gazette Magazine via the UPSTO & the NOU (Notice of Use) is approved via the USPTO attorney anyone who uses the trademark name will be brought up on INFRINGEMENT charges. Maybe she share a jail a cell with one of her buddies?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ed, just go to the USPTO and do a trademark search. Type in MobCandy. It's already registered. The one that RG submitted was rejected. Her layer will continue to take her $$ & it ain't cheap if your paying a lawyer. Once the trademark name gets published in the USPTO GAZETTE magazine with no opposition the person/company then has to just submit material i.e., advertising, consumer based goods or anything showing that name they've selected detailing a product that has been used in commerce. it could be something as simple as postcard displaying the name.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ok the name RG is trying to use will not be allowed once this is finalized. Some lawyer is taking her $$ to try & file this name. Once it's published & there's no OPPOSITION then the person who filed this TM will have the legal right to use it solely for the purpose(s) stated; therefore meaning anyone who uses this name will no longer be able to do so my LAW.

  20. Yeah RG is using the name MOB CANDY ® on her website - I hope the idiot reads this because guess what......read the information below. her application had been denied so the rightful owner of the mark will now have the legal right to sue her. she's got some lawyer who is more than happy to take her $$. This information is directly from the USPTO website....i didn't pull it out of my azzz :) this is funny though. ah nothing like seeing people trying to get over....

You may only use the federal registration symbol "®" after the USPTO actually registers a mark, not while an application is pending. And it may only be used on or in connection with the goods/services listed in the federal trademark registration and while the registration is still alive (you may not continue to use it if you don’t maintain the registration or it expires). Although there are no specific requirements on where the symbol should be placed relative to the mark, most businesses use the symbol in the upper right corner of the mark. Note: Because several foreign countries use “®” to indicate that a mark is registered in that country, use of the symbol by the holder of a foreign registration may be proper.

Additional information concerning trademarks is available at www.uspto.gov.

  23. NO, she won't be able to because she keeps filing for it & the USPTO gives you 5 opportunities to do an extension. Plus on her site she's selling shoes. according to the USPTO she listed that she's selling jewelry so she's committing fraud. the mark is owned by someone in Chicago, it's called MOBCANDY, all one word. MOBCANDY doesn't belong to her, it belongs to the person in the MidWest. her mark will be rejected & the lawyer will just keep taking her money. imagine that? thieves paying lawyers when they lose? what a novel concept huh? this is the person who owns the mark; STANDARD CHARACTER MARK YES
    LITERAL MARK ELEMENT MOBCANDY
MARK DRAWING CODE 4-STANDARD CHARACTER MARK
    COLOR DRAWING FLAG NO

    CURRENT OWNER INFORMATION

    PARTY TYPE 10-ORIGINAL APPLICANT
    NAME WASSERMAN, HEATH NORMAN
    ADDRESS 711 CREEKSIDE CIRCLE
    GURNEE, IL 60031

    1. It surprises me Attorney Chernin has not already contacted Ms. Graziano.

    2. I'm surprised also.

    3. I am not a Trademark attorney, but I would like to know why Mr. Dimatteo has been so quiet regarding Ms. Graziano and the fact that she has stolen the name Mobcandy and is currently promoting her clothing line, along with shoes, jewelry and beauty products. It was mentioned, in this site I believe, the reason Mr. Dimatteo has done nothing about it is because he is old school, which makes absolutely no sense at all. Mr. Dimatteo may not have rights to sue Ms Graziano at all, since he neither Trademarked or had Copyywritten the name. Even though Ms. Graziano's Trademark application is a total mess, it appears she may have more rights to proceed with her current line of products than Mr. Dimatteo. If this Heath Wasserman is granted approval for his Trademark, I would be concerned if I were Ms. Graziano and Mr. Dimatteo.

    5. To anonOct18: Again trademarks are not my point. She appropriated an existing brand and made a bullshit story about how she created it. Look at her on the cover! She thinks her fans are idiots. ADDITIONAL NOTE: They are saying Mob Candy plenty! I hope every time ya all hear it you think of Frank DiMatteo and his magazine ...

  24. This is not entertainment...to me at least. God bless her but, she should leave the Family out of it. It is somewhat of a betrayal. I understand she has a lot invested ( plastic surgery, contracts, etc ). The usage of expletives and show business doesn't do any good....it only brings to light and diminishes what has been worked for a hundred years. She and the others should find another profession....fast.

  25. It seems to me that the words MOB CANDY were used minimally on the show n replaced with MY BRAND as a description for her line..that will be the closest she'll come to acknowledging the thievery of Your Family's title to the magazine. The rerun of the segment where she meets with the designers for her shoe line? FUHGEDABOUDIT! The words INTERCHANGEABLE HEELS were totally edited out of her mouth..LOL..it'll all catch up with her n Frank will have his vindication..n You n Chris will have a field day with the Blogs..I'm waiting for it along with MANY OTHERS..Happy Holidays ~ Susan Testa
