Knife Fight Ends in a Draw, Happily

A Friday afternoon in April. A celebrated pizza chef and a mobster, acquaintances from the neighborhood, were slashing each other bloody on the streets of Brooklyn. Smith Street to be precise. Some say it was over a woman, that the chef was dating the ex-girlfriend of the mobster.

The fight occurred outside Joe’s Superette deli in Carroll Gardens, a few blocks from Lucali on Henry Street, where pizza chef Mark Iacono sweated on a daily basis over his wood-burning oven, for years drawing rave reviews for his pizzas.

Iacono suffered significant blood loss on that Friday in April, as did Batista "Benny" Geritano. The police charged both men with attempted murder and other crimes.

They declined, however, to testify against each other. Each man walked away from court yesterday, when the Brooklyn district attorney had to dismiss all charges.

Murdering Louie DiBono: Testimony Of Gambino Underboss Salvatore (Sammy The Bull) Gravano Part 12

UPDATED   One evening in December 1989, Gambino boss John Gotti and underboss Frank Locascio discussed murdering a troublesome Gambino underling who had failed to show up at a family meeting. Gotti, none too pleased, called out the name of the underling, “Louie DiBono" and added: "You know why he’s dying? Film Tells Story of Married Couple Who Robbed the Mob

Rob the Mob , directed by Oscar-nominee Raymond de Felitta (City Island, Bronx Cheers) and starring Michael Pitt, Nina Arianda, Andy Garcia and Ray Romano, opens in cinemas next month. The film purports to tell the true-life story of Thomas and Rose Marie Uva , a married couple who made the foolhardy, fatal decision to make quick cash by robbing Mafia social clubs in Little Italy, Queens and Brooklyn, a crime spree that ran from the summer of 1992 to near the end of that year, specifically on Christmas Eve 1992, when the two were killed. Thomas and Rose Marie Uva; the press dubbed the married couple as "Bonnie and Clyde."
